After every turn the butterfly moves up one space, leaving players with some serious juggling to do. In the latter, players must match up coloured butterflies with two or more of the same type of gem in order to prevent them from reaching the top and being devoured by a hungry spider. Other unlockable games include Ice Storm and Butterflies, which feature either turn or time-based objectives.
Much like Lightning mode, the games become tense and players will need to earn and make use of all of the power-ups on offer, resulting in some fantastic-looking explosive combos. The game starts with 90 seconds on the clock and the only way to earn more time is by clearing a certain number of rows of dirt. Players must dig down by clearing gems on the bottom row of the game grid, earning gold and other goodies on the way.

In Diamond Mine the Bejeweled grid is divided into two halves the top half houses the gems and the lower half is full of dirt containing diamonds, gold and treasure. Undoubtedly, the true star of the show is the unlockable Diamond Mine game, which is so addictive it should be illegal. Playing Bejeweled may seem like an odd way to relax and the text-based self-help messages are slightly cheap and cheesy, but the binaural sounds, which actually divide brain frequencies (and come with a warning), combined with the breathing techniques, do have some legitimate relaxation qualities, making Zen mode one to try after a particularly stressful day, despite not being as compelling as the more competitive game modes. In addition to the rather liberal game rules, Zen mode also features soothing sounds, motivational messages and offers on-screen breathing techniques. Zen mode, on the other hand, is the ultimate relaxing gaming experience, due to Popcap removing the shackles of time and making it impossible to run out of moves. Lightning will leave your heart racing and brain hurting but the feeling is totally worth it.
It’s fair to say that unlocking more time at the very last second is as satisfying a gaming moment as a Call Of Duty headshot or Hyper combo finish in Street Fighter. As fun, fast and frantic as Lightning is, Popcap manages to make it even more thrilling by adding time gems, which increase the number of seconds on the timer once activated. Lightning is much more overtly exciting, pitting players against the clock in one-minute rounds of Bejeweled. In what is a true compliment to the strength of the latest instalment of Bejeweled, as well as the high quality of the majority of the other game modes, Classic is one of the least interesting and inspiring modes in the game, despite being utterly moreish. It doesn't take long to realise that planning is the key to success and much like a game of chess, players will be looking two or three moves ahead in order to chain combos together and unlock power-ups, which are capable of destroying whole rows and columns of jewels as well as potentially all of the gems on the board. Most people will probably begin by playing the standard Classic mode, in which players reach higher levels by earning an increasing number of points without running out of moves. It's extremely easy to pick up and play, but insanely difficult to master - a philosophy at the centre of all good puzzle games. The latest game ditches the rotational gameplay from Bejeweled Twist in favour of the traditional method of switching adjacent gems to form vertical or horizontal chains of three. It looks gorgeous, it features a wealth of bewitching game modes and is as addictive as a bag of class A drugs dipped in chocolate. Finally, six years later, Bejeweled 3 makes its way onto the PC, but with so many satisfied and addicted gamers blissfully plugging away at the older versions of Popcap's puzzler, does Bejeweled 3 still manage to sparkle?ĭespite the core gameplay remaining relatively unchanged, Bejeweled 3 is an absolute diamond of a game. Bejeweled may not garner the same amount of attention as Call Of Duty, Halo or Grand Theft Auto, yet it remains one of the most successful gaming series of all time, selling millions of copies and racking up an extraordinary number of downloads.
